Portugal is well known in the wave riding world for its flawless beach breaks, surprising reef breaks, and geometrical point breaks. Additionally, you get in the package one of the sunniest countries in Europe.
But in the last couple of years, Portugal unveiled new surf breaks. In a way, they're similar to the man-made trench that creates rideable waves at the Waimea River mouth, in Hawaii.
There's the standing wave at Lagoa de Óbidos, and now the static river wave of São Lourenço Beach, near Ericeira. João Maria Jorge, a local videographer, captured the first rides on the small, chocolate milk rollers.
The rare event attracted many local bodyboarders and surfers, including the former national surfing champion João Guedes.
