Portuguese bodyboarders are used to big wave riding. The entire shore of Portugal is full of hidden surf spots where waves break in a giant scale. The famous Nazaré Canyon delivers some of the biggest waves in Europe and has been attracting hundreds of big wave riders.
While the surfing circus enjoyed six-foot barrels at Supertubos, in Peniche, a group of fearless bodyboarders took Praia do Norte, in Nazaré, in absolutely gnarly conditions.
Swell picked up and local riders Luís Pereira, Tiago Fazendeiro, Ricardo Faustino, Bernardo Barroso and Fábio Laureano found a way of dropping in through the giant walls of water.
Garrett McNamara, the Hawaiian big wave icon, got along with the bodyboarders in what was considered one of the best surfing days of the year in Nazaré.
