Sergio Alonzo: trial star at Fronton

Sergio Alonzo has conquered the 2012 NMD/VS Fronton Pro Trials, after defeating Sacha Specker, Jacob Romero and Ruben Redondo, in the Canary Islands.

The Fronton Pro Trials delivered crucial points to Global Qualifying Series (GQS) riders who are fighting to qualify for the 2013 Grand Slam Series.

The current top 14 riders on the GQS are Eder Luciano, Brahim Iddouch, Damian King, Sacha Specker, Yoan Florantin, Jeff Hubbard, Alan Munoz, Jones Russell, Pierre-Louis Costes, Jacob Romero, Nick Ormerod, Sergio Louis, Amaury Lavernhe, Alberto Colucci and Joao Zik.

Of these 15 GQS riders, Eder Luciano, Jeff Hubbard, Pierre-Louis Costes and Amaury Lavernhe are currently in the top 16 on the 2012 GSS, which means that Jacob Romero and Nick Ormerod will also fall into the top 8 of the Qualifying Series and secure a slot on next year's Grand Slam Series.

Current GQS leader, Eder Luciano is sitting in a dangerous 15th place on the GSS and if Australian riders like Ryan Hardy, Dallas Singer, Jake Stone or Sam Bennet manage to leapfrog Luciano on the ratings, pushing him out of the top 16, Nick Ormerod in 8th will be bumped into 9th, as Luciano will be forced to use his GQS points to qualify for next years Grand Slam Series.

This can only be determined once the event is complete or all riders in contention for a GSS top 16 slot have been eliminated. Brahim Iddouch, Nick Ormerod, Guilhermo Cobo, Yoan Florantin, Alan Munoz, Antonio Cardoso and Airam Cabrera have also got a place in the main event, at Fronton.

Standouts of Round 1 included Jared Houston, Jacob Romero, Jeff Hubbard and Australia's Ryan Hardy, who posted the highest heat totals. Hardy claimed the highest single wave score an impressive 8.7 out of a possible 10 points for a long barrel finished off with a strong roll on a right hander.

Also walking away with heat victories were Pierre-Louis Costes, Nick Ormerod, Alex Uranga and Alan Munoz.
