2009 Peniche Sumol Pro 

The last event on the E5'09 (IBA European leg) has been run and won by Brazilians Neymara Carvalho and Lucas Nogueira.

The surf was dropping and the event was finished on the Saturday to take advantage of the decreasing swell.

Neymara defeated fellow Brazilian Isabella Sousa and Lucas best Dave Winchester (Australia).

The IBA World Tour now packs up and heads towards Buzios in Brazil for a WWT & WMT event.

The Women and DK riders will go from there to Venezuela for the Bodyboard Pro festival.

Both the Mens and Women's world titles will be decided at Confital in the Canary Islands at the final Grand Slam for 2009.

Five or six riders are in contention for the crown in the Men and there are three or four potential outcomes in the Women so this year is shaping up as a fairy-tail finish for the IBAso make sure that you stay tuned to all the results.

2009 Peniche Pro 

The opening day of the ultimate event on the IBA European leg got underway in foggy 3 footers in Peniche today.

The wave-rich area here in Peniche is renowned for good waves and today Lagido Beach served up some sweet left-handers off the reef.

The event saw a large contingent of riders come from Ireland and Darragh McCarter said that the sport is growing back home.

“Yes, it’s looking good back in Ireland. Lots of kids are pickin’ up bodyboards and we are seeing more and more guys in the line-up” said McCarter.

The best performer of the Irish team was Shane Macken who won his opening heat with a strong combination of moves netting him a 7.75 and 6.75 making him the rounds top scorer.

Macken placed 4th ISA World Bodyboarding games last year in Portugal.

Other R1 standout’s included Paulo Costa (Portugal) who has a rich history that spans back over a decade making him the pioneer of International bodyboarding from Portugal and fellow countryman and red-hot junior Dino Carmo.

R2 saw some outstanding performances from Portuguese guys like Bernardo Alvim, Diogo Silva, Antonio Cardoso, Joao Pinheiro, Helio Conda, Joao Barciela & Guilherme Guerra who all won their heats.

The Irish riders continued their run with Shane Mecken and Darragh McCarter both surfing their way into R3.

Peniche Pro 2009 in Supertubos 

The European leg of the IBA World Tour wraps up this week with the final event at Supertubes, Peniche.

The sleepy little fishing village will be buzzing with the biggest names in the sport including 9 times world champion and living legend Mike Stewart (Hawaii).

At 46 years of age Mike is one of the front-runners in the race for this years IBA world title.

“Yes I am looking forward to Peniche. This area produces some of the best waves in Portugal ” said Stewart.

“I would need a podium finish to replace one of my other results”.

“ It will be a hectic finish to this years title with 6 guys possibly in contention” said Mike.

Other names locked in for Peniche’ include Portugal’s own dynamic duo of Manuel Centeno and Hugo Pinheiro as well as Hawaiian Dave Hubbard, Australians Mitch Rawlins, Ryan Hardy, Ben Player, Chad Jackson, Brad Hughes and Michael Novy and Brazilians Guilherme Tamega, Eder Luciano, Luis Villar and Lucas Nogueira.

Silvano Lourenço has been chosen as Wild Card for the event.

The race for the 2009 IBA World women’s Tour is just as exciting with Neymara Carvalho (Brazil) and Eunate Aguirre (Spain) both pushing for the title.
