Bodyboarding in Western Australia is currently a buzz with the final EBB State Series event to culminate this weekend in the Yallingup area. Extra excitement is building with some of Australia’s top riders making their way to WA to compete in the fifth Australian bodyboard tour event, the EBB Pro. WA’s premiere bodyboarding event, is boasting a two star pro men’s division and a two star men’s drop knee division that will see a total of five thousand dollars prize money up for grabs.
Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks commented on the importance of the EBB State Series and the EBB Pro. “This is a crucial event not only for the WA guys who are surfing for spots at the upcoming National Titles, but also the guys here chasing the prize money and ratings points on the IBA Tour.”
“Each year the EBB Pro has been one of my favourite events to be a part of. I think the South-West showcases some great waves for bodyboarding, and each year the standard amongst the riders just keeps getting higher. Im really looking forward to this one.” He said.
The 2009 EBB Pro will be a special one given EBB is celebrating its tenth anniversary since opening it doors for business. Things have come along way since then and now EBB is seen as WA’s ‘exclusive’ retail outlet for bodyboarders, who had long suffered having to shop at surf shops.
Given a date clash with the IBA World Tour, some of WA’s high profile bodyboarders such as Ryan Hardy (Scarborough), Brad Hughes (Trigg), Chad Jackson (Woodlands) will be in Europe chasing world title points, as well as defending champion Michael Novy (QLD).
“It’s a disappointing result not to have our best guys here to compete, but I guess that just creates a more even playing field for those guys who have entered.” Said Justin Majeks
WA’s leading chances to take out the EBB Pro include 16 year old super grom Alex Halsey (Woodvale), Ben Veitch (Margaret River), Lee Szcezepanski (Margaret River), Brendan Gabel (Mandurah), Ian Fergusson (Scarborough) and Michael Honeybone (Heathridge). Pushing them will be an impressive list of East coast competitors that includes Jake Stone (QLD), Mitch Woodland (NSW), Glenn Sullivan (NSW), Jones Rusell (NSW) and Thomas Rigby (QLD) who will be all keen to taste success in WA.
