The odds of becoming a world champion athlete are extraordinary to begin with.

The odds of two brothers simultaneously holding world titles in separate divisions of the same sport are virtually incalculable.

Yet on Kaua‘i, one family has produced such a result.

Jeff and Dave Hubbard can each introduce themselves as 2009 International Bodyboarding Association world champions. Jeff claimed the Men’s Open season championship, while Dave grabbed the Drop Knee title.

The amazing result should not exactly come as a shock. It was Jeff’s second time winning the year-end honor (2006), while Dave is now a four-time world champ (2005, 2007, 2008).

Wade McCurdy

Champion WA body boarder Wade McCurdy, 19, jumped from the Dawesville Bridge pedestrian underpass, south of Mandurah, with a mate about 1am last night.

The friend surfaced and managed to swim ashore but the teen failed to surface.

A woman was with the pair when they jumped about 20 metres to the water below.

Mr McCurdy's body was recovered from the Dawesville Cut this morning following a big search involving aircraft, divers, police launches and volunteers.

It was a further devastating blow to his family, who lost another son, Ryan, 22, at the same time last year when he fell out of a tree.

“Ryan was an elder brother who Wade really looked up to,” a family friend who did not want to be named said.

IBA Pipeline

The 2010 IBA World Men’s Tour will launch in February when the first Grand Slam gets underway at Pipeline in Hawaii with the Turbo Bodyboards Pipe Pro.

Pipe has long been the holy grail of International bodyboarding and a massive rollup of the worlds best is expected for the event.

Once again Turbo Bodyboards will sponsor the Grand Slam contest and IBA general manager Terry McKenna is very happy to have them committed again.

“The guys at Turbo have a great understanding of the big picture and since day 1 they have been forthcoming with support on all levels of the sport” said Mckenna.
