KPWT vs PKRA: an endless war?

The international kiteboarding scene is absolutely fired up.

In the last months, we saw the Kiteboard Pro World Tour (KPWT) joining the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA), which meant a direct relationship with the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).
Then, the ISAF is one of the 35 international Sports Federations recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Can you see what goes next? :)

Well, in the end of March, the PKRA announced it had become an effective member of the International Surfing Association (ISA).
The same exercise applies here: the International Surfing Association (ISA) is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the World Governing Authority for surfing, although surfing is not an Olympic sport.

Nevertheless, the International Sports Federations recognized by the Olympic Committee are responsible for the integrity of their sport on the international level.

It is clear that kiteboarding, as a growing sport, is broken in two strong pieces.

And it is also clear that he International Olympic Committee is making a mistake, as it not understandable that the same sport is recognized through two different indirect organizations (KPWT and PKRA) and two different direct federations/associations (IKA and ISA).

Is this an endless war?

Safe Kiteboarding

We've been publishing too many stories about severe disasters with kiteboarders. Some lose their stamina out in the ocean, some are dragged by strong winds into the urban areas.

Kiteboarding requires, as many other sports, a long learning curve before greater adventures. The other day, I got another bad kiteboarding new. Pedro, one of my best friends, got injured in a leg and will be off the waters for the next 45 days.

SurferToday.com has been writing about hazards in the ocean and we have recently published an interesting guide to all watermen. It talks about rules, the common sense in the water and some safety procedures as we all need to respect the wind and the other sportsmen.

I hope kiteboarding and kiteboarders reach higher levels of recognition in the sports world.

Who knows what surprise could London 2012 bring us?...

Cheers,
