Satellite measurements have confirmed that sea level is rising much faster than scientists expected. The consequences will be destructive floods.
Global sea levels are rising 60% faster than computer projections issued a few years ago by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The rise in CO2 concentration and global temperature has continued to closely match the projections over the past five years, while sea level continues to rise faster than anticipated. This means that floods produced by future Sandy-like storms will threaten high-density population cities such as New York City, Los Angeles and various metropolitan areas in Florida. |
