The population of great white sharks is considered to be dangerously low and near extinction.
The US wildlife officials believe there is a risk of extinction, as an estimated total of only 338 great white sharks is living in the waters of the west coast. It has been recommended to the California Fish and Game Commission to accept a petition that protects the predator by listing them as threatened or endangered under state's Endangered Species Act. The number of 338 great white sharks is considered in a range that stretches from Mexico to the Bering Sea and out to Hawaii. The "Carcharodon Carcharias" may reach the 6 meter (20 ft) in length and 2268 kilograms (50000 lb) in weight. The great white shark is the world's largest known macropredatory fish.
