When Fuerteventura calls, they all come. The island, situated in the Canaries, has got the wind the windsurfers and kiteboarders need. Guaranteed. Plus, there’s the bonus of white sandy beaches, blue skies and summer-like temperatures.

The athletes race across the water with an acceleration which would leave a sports car standing, performing spectacular stunts worthy of an aerobatics team. And all with no exhaust fumes or motor noise.

The efficiency with which the sportsmen and women use the wind is formidable. A modern windsurfing sail develops more horsepower per kilogram transported than a car equipped with an 800 horsepower motor.

The 2008 US Nationals were held in wild conditions just under the Golden Gate Bridge. Like the 2007 event, the 2008 event was hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club and run with the precision of a finely tuned Swiss watch. The US Nationals are sanctioned by US Sailing, the governing body of sailing in the US. This designation helps to pave the way for kite racing to be sanctioned by ISAF, the international body of sailing and hopefully an Olympic berth in the future.

This year’s event could only be described as competitively heated! The world’s top racers were in attendance, including last year’s champion, Anthony Chavez, top Bay area racers Shawn Richman and Jeff Kafka, kite master Sky Solbach, and of course reigning PKRA world champion Sean Farley. On the women’s side, Kristine Boese was on hand to fearlessly defend her 2007 title.

With overwhelming support from the kiteboarding community, the globally recognized Professional Kiteboard Riders Association (PKRA) will be organizing two major events at the Kite Masters - Portimão World Tour 2008 in Portimão, Portugal.

In the tradition of the Tennis Masters Cup, PKRA will be hosting the Freestyle Kite Masters Invitational Cup, where the best 16 progressive freestyle riders of the world (male and female), along with 4 major Portuguese riders, will face a battle dubbed “the most challenging kiteboarding competition to date.”

The “crème de la crème” of the kiteboarding world will compete in a new, different and exciting group format where they will vie for a chance to be crowned the kiteboarding champion of champions, plus a generous amount of prize money.
