On a clear, calm and cold morning, competitors and spectators alike arrived at Knights where they were greeted with some glassy 1 to 2 foot wedges.
Rather than move to the event to the more swell exposed beach of Waitpinga, the call was made to hold the competition at Knights as the swell was expected to rise throughout the morning.
It proved to be a good call as the waves became more consistent, with some perfect 3 foot wedges pumping through the lineup.
Usual stand-outs Dylan Beach and Jack Thomas were impressing the crowd with some big rolls and stylish inverts, but the talk of the day was about local lad Carlo Petrou.
In a barrel that will be remembered as the wave of the event, Petrou pulled in to the tube only to appear seconds later behind the huge spit to the cheers of the crowd.
In the Drop Knee Final, Karl Morgan showed why he is the undisputed South Australian champion, with some huge floaters and powerful spins on the Knee.
The highlight of the day has to be the Final, which will go down as one of the most exciting in South Australian Bodyboarding history.
Favourite Dylan Beach was in the lead for much of the heat with a solid right hand tube and a nice reverse spin.
Jack Thomas and Carlo Petrou were nipping at his heels but it was Jasper Ashmoore who stepped it up with a massive invert to put him in the lead.
This put the pressure on Beach who, with thirty seconds left, caught a medium sized wave, but couldn't find the score to claim victory resulting in the upset of the year.
Jasper Ashmoore who has proven to be a competitive force this year finally put it all together to win his first competition ever.
Asked if he thought he was in for a chance, Ashmoore humbly said "I saw some of the other boys doing well so i thought I'd give it a crack".
Never competing before this year, Ashmoore, 28 years old, has proved that it's not just the younger guys pushing the sport in South Australia.
"I'd like to thank all the guys competing and its good that I got this one for the older guys."
"Its time to have a beer I reckon".
We would like to thank World Bodyboards and Coopers for making round three of the South Australian Bodyboard State Titles possible.
The Surfing South Australia Bodyboarding State Titles, South Australia’s premier Bodyboarding series, is made possible thanks to the support of Surfing SA, Coopers Brewery, Surfing Australia and the Office for Recreation and Sport.
