Held in powerful, 0.5-1m beach break conditions at Narrowneck on the northern Gold Coast, Macdonald powerfully attacked the shifting beach break peaks on the final day of competition, scoring a combined heat total of 17.77 (out of a possible 20) in the final, including a 9.50 ride to defeat Noah Lane (Rainbow Beach, QLD), Dan Pryor (Tugun, QLD) and Sol Pereira-Ryan (Coolangatta, QLD) who finished second to fourth respectively.
Macdonald who was also recently selected in the Queensland State Junior Surfing Team said he was shocked by the result.
“I honestly can’t believe I won that final, especially in an event as prestigious as the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters,” said Macdonald.
“All the Red Bull had everyone firing in the earlier rounds, so I was nervous going into the last heat, but some good waves came my way and I was able to show what I can do,” he said.
Macdonald timed his run to perfection, upsetting Tugun’s Dan Pryor and Rainbow Beach’s Noah Lane in the final, who both had been the standout competitors leading into the deciding heat of the event.
Dan Pryor was the only surfer of the event to register a perfect-ten point ride in his second round heat and although he was able to make the final, he couldn’t quite reproduce the form he displayed at the beginning of the day.
Meanwhile, Noah Lane cemented his status as a future world surfing star proving to be the most consistent performer of the event, unfortunately for Lane he was unable to match Macdonald’s powerful and carving surfing in the deciding heat.
The result sees all four finalists qualify to compete in the Trials of the 2009 Red Bull Junior Surf Masters at Cronulla Beach in Sydney, on Friday 28 August, 2009.
If successful, their junior surfing careers will be given a significant boost by then competing in the Finals of the 2009 Red Bull Junior Surf Masters, where they will go head-to-head with ten invited pro junior surfers, hand picked by Mick Fanning himself.
Contest Director Scott Gillies said the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters is like the Oscars of junior surfing.
“The Red Bull Junior Surf Masters Gold Coast Qualifier has felt like a world-tour event,” said Gillies.
“The standard of surfing, the event atmosphere, the location…all of these critical elements of a surfing contest aligned for us this weekend and to be supported by an exciting brand like Red Bull makes for a memorable event,” he said.
