Marzo, who was in impressive form in his opening Round 2 heat, took the day’s top honors when he nabbed the event’s second perfect single-wave score en route to claiming the day’s highest heat total of 17.00 out of 20 with an impressive display of backhand barrel-riding on the hollow Playa Zicatela righthanders.
“I was able to find some good rights out there,” Marzo said. “I was stoked when I saw that one coming. I almost fell on the drop, but I was able to set my line and make it.”
Blake Howard (Carpenteria, CA), 26, who was also a Round 2 standout, found a bombing left to claim an impressive 9.50 out of 10 on the way to his second Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido heat win. Howard’s solid 15.50 heat total saw him easily advance through to the Round of 16.
“I was just sitting down the beach trying to stay away from anybody and trying to find any corner that came my way and it happened to be a good one,” Howard said.
The talented barrel-rider’s strategy of staying busy in his heats has been paying off and the Carpenteria native will definitely be a threat to his fellow competitors in the next round.
“I was moving around a little bit,” Howard said. “It seems a little more walled today because of the long intervals, but there are still corners. You just have to avoid the rips and find the corners.”
Angelo Lozano (Puerto Escondido, MEX), 22, who won the ASP WQS 3-Star Vans PXM International last year at Puerto Escondido, looked hungry to claim his second event at home today and managed to find two high-scoring waves despite the inconsistent conditions in his Round 3 heat.
“The heat started out fast and I got a good left in the first two minutes,” Lozano said. “Then when I got out I thought I’d try and find a right, but there were no waves for 18 minutes. Then, luckily I was able to get that good tube to get a second good score.”
