The conclusion of Round 4 was marked by huge upsets, in yet another great day of surfing at the 2014 J-Bay Open, in Supertubes.
Matt Wilkinson is already one of the standouts of the South African event. The goofy-footer eliminated Kelly Slater in Round 3, with a consistent performance and multiple clean snaps.
The final waves before the buzzer saw Slater slipping off his board while Wilkinson's rhythm continued, earning him another nine-point ride and the win.
"No one really looks forward to a heat against Kelly, but my backhand and my boards are feeling solid. It's so hard to beat anyone out here at J-Bay. I knew I needed to catch good waves against Kelly, and I'm stoked to make it through," says Wilkinson.
Slater leaves the competition in equal 13th place, while Wilkinson went on to win his Round 4 heat against Adriano de Souza and Kolohe Andino, and earn a place in the quarterfinals.
Alejo Muniz is also showing off. He defeated Michel Bourez in Round 3 by throwing fins and wafts, and then got over Mick Fanning and C.J. Hobgood in Round 4, to earn his first quarterfinal berth of the season.
"It's always hard to surf against Michel (Bourez) because he is a really good friend of mine. I think him and Gabriel are the best two surfers of the year," concludes Muniz.
