Taumata Puhetini and Bruno Santos have earned a golden ticket for the Billabong Pro Tahiti 2015, in Teahupoo.
The Air Tahiti Nui Billabong Pro Trials are over. The wildcard competition got underway in three-to-four foot Teahupoo waves. A total of 16 surfers tried their luck, but only a couple will join the elite.
Puhetini defeated Santos in the final. It's his third victory in the Trials while the Brazilian celebrates his fifth wildcard into the event. The Tahitian wants to forget the wipeout suffered last year in Round 2.
"That is in the past and long forgotten. I love Teahupoo and looking forward to the waves. I hope to surf against my good friend Italo [Ferreira] in the main event because I love his surfing," said Taumata Puhetini.
The surf forecast for the waiting period - August 14th-25th - is not promising. Small to medium forces are expected to prevail in the infamous reef pass of Teahupoo.
Jordy Smith and Matt Banting have withdrawn from the competition due to injury. They were replaced by Aritz Aranburu and Garrett Parkes.
