Frederico Morais and Vasco Ribeiro have defeated Mick Fanning and Adriano de Souza, in Round 3 of the 2015 Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal, held in Supertubos, Peniche.
The Portuguese wildcards had a stellar day of surfing supported by an enthusiastic home crowd. As a result, the 2015 World Surf League champion will be decided in Pipeline, Hawaii.
Morais opened his account with a near-perfect 9.13 and later backed it up with a 6.90. Fanning was out of the competition, but Frederico kept his composure and also won the Round 4 heat.
"It's amazing to win with good scores against Mick Fanning. I'm super stoked. Any surfer here would have been a tough competitor, but I'm feeling really good, and I have nothing to lose. I just wanted to show how I surf," said Morais.
Ribeiro wanted to raise the local flag and keep the Portuguese hopes of winning the event alive, so he went for it. Vasco rode six waves and collected 14.36 to send Adriano de Souza home early.
Gabriel Medina was on fire at Supertubos. The Brazilian prodigy landed a powerful backhand full rotation to eliminate Caio Ibelli from the 2015 Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal.
"I feel blessed to get that last wave, I was asking God for one more opportunity and luckily I got one. Today was a crazy day with the losses of Adriano and Mick, but I'm not thinking World Title, I just want to do good as always," added Medina.
