The first-ever World Dog Surfing Championships will be held at Linda Mar Beach, in San Francisco, on the 10th September 2016.

Some of the world's best canine wave riders will compete for prizes across six divisions: small dogs, medium dogs, large dogs, very large dogs, tandem dogs, and tandem human/dog.

According to the organizers, the first surf dog competition was designed by Kevin Reed, the author of "The Dog's Guide to Surfing," and took place in San Diego.

All pets' rides will be judged based on the size of the wave, the length of the ride, the overall certainty on the board, confidence, technique, and tricks. The man's best friend will have to wear a life jacket, and is allowed to use a foam or fiberglass surfboard. Surf leashes can't be used.

The inaugural World Dog Surfing Championships are more than a four-legged surf contest. The event will raise funds for charities including the Marin Humane Society, Muttville, and the Peninsula Humane Society.

Guinness world record holder Abbie Girl, and tandem specialist Skyler are some of the stars that have confirmed their presence in the event. That's it - the dog days aren't over.
