Tyler Wright is the grand winner of the 2016 World Surf League Women's Championship Tour (CT).
The Australian surfer from Culburra Beach secured her first world surfing title at the age of 22.
After guaranteeing a spot on on the Roxy Pro France final, Wright saw her rival Courtney Conlogue failing to overcome Carissa Moore in a decisive semifinal heat. As a result, Tyler celebrated with friends and supporters on the beach.
"There are a lot of reasons why I set out the win this world title this year and a lot of reasons that I did not mention to the public. Last year was such a hectic year. I lost an uncle and this was the last event that he ever saw me compete in," expressed an emotional Tyler Wright.
"A lot of emotional moments, but pretty much from that moment I promised him that I would win a world title and I did. It’s in his honor and my brother's honor and my whole entire family and the community I come from."
Carissa Moore ended up beating Wright in the Roxy Pro France final. Tyler won four events in 2016 season and finished twice in the runner-up position. Her worst result was 13th place in Fiji.
"A massive congrats to Courtney. I've been in her position twice now and I know what it's like. I love her, I love the way she competes and she's such a strong competitor," added the 2016 world surfing champion.
The final stop on the 2016 Women's Championship Tour is the Maui Women's Pro, in Hawaii.
