Brazilian Jadson Andre ripped on this Saturday at ASP WQS 6-Star Maresia Surf International, the stylish goofy-footer’s now placed atop the ratings in the hunt for the ASP WQS Tour title and qualification for the prestigious ASP World Tour. Andre grabbed first place from Australian Daniel Ross after winning two heats and advancing to tomorrow’s Quarterfinals. This cold Saturday had heavy storm weather and strong winds with two-to-three foot (0.5-1 metre) waves. WIth surfers needing to find the best waves to advance, the new ASP WQS leader, Brazilian Jadson Andre was on fire in the waves of Mole Beach at Florianopolis. "I try do not think too much in the rankings right now," Andre said. "I’m just so stoked. I had the best heat so far in the event and that is what I want, surf heat by heat, do the tactics right and get some waves to reach the Final." Andre also preferred not to comment about the qualification to the ASP World Tour for 2010. "This is my main goal, but I don’t want to think about that right now because we got only half of the year and a lot of things can happen," Andre said. "I do not want to repeat mistakes that many have done and lose my position in the last events, so let’s take this to the end of the year." Andre and another three Brazilians advanced to the Quarterfinals, which will open Sunday’s decisive day of the Maresia Surf International in Santa Catarina State. The experienced and ex-top surfer Brazilian Neco Padaratz and two other talents of the new generation Miguel Pupo and Gabriel Medina. Neco who already won two events, sponsored by Maresia Surfwear, will face Jadson on the Quarterfinal 4. The international surfers had another good day with Americans Patrick Gudauskas and Austin Ware, Hawaiian Dusty Payne and Australian Matt Wilkinson advancing to the Quarters. Austin Ware spoke about his heat and the conditions at Mole Beach. “I feel good, I got some good waves and moved on," Ware said. "Compared to yesterday is really, really windy and the swell’s direction is a little different, but there still a lot of pockets and I really feel strong in my backhand.” Austin will face the younger and the record-holder of the Maresia Surf International so far, Brazilian Gabriel Medina (15) who won his heat over the Top 15 ASP WQS Surfer, American Brett Simpson. "It was a difficult heat because the waves are not in the best conditions, very windy and messy," Medina said. "But I managed to find waves to take the scores to win. Now I will go to Quarters with everyone, I just competed in two events, this is my third one so I don’t have anything to lose." In the first Quarterfinal will be another young Brazilian surfer Miguel Pupo (17) against the only surfer representing Hawaii in the Maresia Surf International, Dusty Payne. “I’m very happy," Payne said. "I had a slow heat out there. The conditions are really hard but I did everytihng that I could do to move on. I’m stoked with this result. Unfortunately the onshore winds made it hard, but it’s okay, maybe tomorrow we’ll have better waves." American Patrick Gudauskas will surf in Quarterfinal 3 against the only Australian still in the event, Matt Wilkinson. “I had three good heats in the last few rounds and in the last event, so I think I have been surfing good and confident," Wilkinson said. "I got third last week and I have been lucky and I expect to finish better here in Brazil." Gudauskas used his powerful backhand to smash the waves of Mole Beach and make another good result. “I think I had a little bit of advantage on the backside, because there is a strong wind coming on the face," Gudauskas said. ’The other guy (David do Carmo) was surfing really good all the event, so I’m happy to move on. Everyone is surfing good and in this conditions anything is possible." Looking ahead to tomorrow (Sunday), the contest gets into the business end of things, kicking off at 9am with the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Final (around 1pm) will be surfed.
