Super Bock Pro kicks off in south Portugal
Friday, 11 July 2008 11:26

Super Bock Pro

The Superbock Pro, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 1-Star event, got underway today in tricky two foot (0.5 meter) waves. Four heats only were done before the tide forced organisers to put the contest on hold until tomorrow Friday, July 11, at 7.30 AM (GMT+1).

Four heats remain before Round 1 finishes and the best seeded surfers including defending champion Eric Rebiere (FRA) should get their start tomorrow. Rebiere, who has won an event since his Super Bock Pro victory a year ago, will be chasing a repeat in South Portugal and is confident.

"Winning this event was huge relief for me last year and I am looking forward to paddling out tomorrow", Rebiere said. "A lot of young guys who competed in the ASP Grade-1 Pro Junior will be in the event and it is good to surf against upcoming surfers, always challenging."

Vasco Ribeiro (PRT), one of the youngest competitors of the event, was today’s top performer when he posted a solid 14.83 point heat tally (out of a possible 20) to win Heat 2 ahead of other promissing Portuguese talent Frederico Morais (PRT).

"The waves were very hard to surf but I took advantage of my light weight", Ribeiro said. "A lot of good surfers entered this event and it is a very good experience for me to compete against top European surfers."

Abilio Pinto, Super Bock Pro contest director, is confident about the forecast for the three remaining days of the waiting period and is looking forward to finishing in good quality waves.

"Cordoama is a consistent beachbreak and will get any swell direction so we are very confident", Pinto said. "It is a small event but every year we have some excellent surfers coming like current ASP WQS Top 50 member Marlon Lipke (DEU) and the show should be great again."

The Superbock Pro, fourth stop of 13 on the ASP WQS European Tour, will be crucial for the regional ratings and give current ratings’ leader Romain Laulhe (FRA) some new contenders.

With four days of waiting period, running until Sunday, July 13, the Superbock Pro will have LIVE SCORING available and all fresh news and pics online.

ROUND 1 RESULTS
Heat 1: Felix Delanne (FRA), Alexandre Ferreira (PRT), Jean-Charles Debray (GLP) No Show
