Day two of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 3-Star Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido saw local surfer Christian Corzo (Puerto Escondido, MEX) the event’s first perfect 10-point-ride en route to surfing a near perfect heat of a 19.60 out of 20 by displaying beautiful forehand barrels and dynamic turns. Surfers competing on the ASP WQS are out to claim the valuable ratings points on offer towards qualification for the prestigious ASP Dream Tour and several big wave barrel-hunters and local standouts have also been attracted to stake their claim for a victory at the infamous ‘Mexican Pipeline.’ Corzo, who assisted in eliminating ASP World Tour surfer Timmy Reyes (Huntington Beach ,CA), 27, in yesterday’s competition, continued to flare today when claimed the Quiksilver Pro Puerto Escondido’s first perfect 10 with a clean barrel-ride on a thumping Puerto lefthander in front of his home crowd. “The waves weren’t perfect before my heat, but then when I was out there, I saw that perfect left come in,” Corzo said. “It was such a good wave and great to get the perfect score at my home break.” Corzo continued to dominate his heat after the perfect score, capitalizing on another lefthand barrel, combining it with a big forehand blast and reverse on the inside to tack a 9.60 on to his score line. The near-perfect 19.60 heat total is the highest of the event and will surely be hard to top. “Once I heard the 10, I felt relaxed and then that smaller wave came through,” Corzo said. “I got that little barrel and had the turn and went for the reverse and just felt smooth and comfortable. I can’t believe that I got those scores.” Blake Howard (Carpenteria, CA), 26, also donated an impressive barrel-riding performance today, capitalizing on a treacherous Playa Zicatela lefthander to claim a nine-point-ride en route to his solid 15.50 out of 20 heat total to advance through to Round 3. “I was just trying to start off with any little barrel that I could find,” Howard said. “Everyone was saying that there were no barrels. That nine was actually a smaller wave and I thought it was going to be a shallow barrel and as it hit the sandbar it kept running.” Clay Marzo (Maui, HI), 19, started the day’s opening heat with flare by combining strong forehand barrels and massive above-the-lip maneuvers. “That heat ended up working out for me,” Marzo said. “We got the good early morning conditions and I was able to get a few good waves out there. “ The young goofy-footer spends most of his time free-surfing, but chooses to compete in events on the ASP WQS throughout the year and managed to capitalize on today’s conditions which remind him of his home on Maui. “I’m only doing a few ‘QS events and this was one I really wanted to do,” Marzo said. “This is my second time to Puerto and I like it here, the waves are similar to home.” Angelo Lozano (Puerto Escondido, MEX), 22, was another local Puerto Escondido surfer to impress the local crowd today. The hard-charging Mexican got off to a slow start in his heat while waiting for a good barrel, but ended up slashing his way to Round three with clean forehand gouges to take the heat win when no barrels were on offer. “I was waiting for a left barrel, but it didn’t come,” Lozano said. “After 12 minutes I didn’t have anything and the other guys were getting scores just doing some turns, so I changed my game and started doing some turns as well and that worked out. I ended up passing through that heat with turns. That heat was all about turns, there were a few close out barrels, but there weren’t that many of them.” Lozano was the winner of an ASP WQS 3-Star event at Puerto Escondido last year, the PXM International Vans Pro, and was happy to get through his first heat today in an attempt to claim another title at his home break. “I’m happy to get that first heat out of the way,” Lozano said. “Those guys surf well and I’ve known them for a while. Anyone can win or lose a heat.
