Joel Ford

The Queensland leg of the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by SNICKERS came to a close with champions crowned today.

The morning broke with nervous expressions donning the faces of competitors who shone through to the final day of competition at the prestigious grommet event.

The surf gods looked down on the final day of competition providing surfers with fun, contestable 1 metre (2-3ft) waves.

Competitors across all divisions lined up for battle with the aim of being crowned the Rip Curl GromSearch champion.

The road to the finals was no easy feat with only the hungriest surfers prevailing, but the final that everybody came to watch was the 16 boys.

The raw talent was evident in the 16 boy’s division at the first sound of the starting siren.

Cabarita’s giant slayer Joel Ford (NSW) drew first blood with breath taking top to bottom manoeuvres and precise wave selection, scoring a massive opening 8.5 point ride.

Nipping at Ford’s heels was International Michael February (Cape Town, SAF) answering back with a 5.50 first wave score.

The lead swapped continuously throughout the 20 minute heat with professional surfing demonstrated from all competitors, although Cabarita’s Ford (NSW) was to be victorious in the blue ribbon final amassing a total heat tally of 15.49 (8.5 and a 6.90).

“I dedicate this win to my brother who is hospital at the moment.”

“Everybody here at this event was ripping and I am over the moon to win at home on the Gold Coast,” said Ford.

As a consolation prize of winning the toughest GromSearch competition in the seven event series, Ford (Cabarita NSW) also earns a spot in the national GromSearch final, which takes place on the 29th of March during the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach Australia.

The final day of surfing at the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by SNICKERS was razor sharp with worthy winners being crowned in every division.

Event seven of the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by SNICKERS moves to Cronulla on the 22nd-25th of January 2010 for the final leg of the national grommet series.

Rip Curl GromSearch Series, Australia’s premier Grommet Surfing Series, is made possible thanks to the support of Rip Curl, SNICKERS, Surfing Australia, Rush Surf, Waves Surfing Magazine and Fuel TV.
