Playa Westfalia: it is a beach in Costa Rica, not the converted Volkswagen camper vans

This weekend, February 20 and 21, the first ever Circuito Nacional de Surf DayStar will visit the Caribbean coast’s Playa Westfalia. Thanks to the local organization who made it all possible, the best surfers in the country will gather in front of Hotel del Pilón for the third date of this national tournament.

In another 4-star appointment which will award 1,500 points to the winners of each división, the immense potential of the zone promises that this date will make Costa Rican surf history, thanks to the phenomenal seeding of surfers already at ranked at a high level.

That the Circuito Nacional DayStar is finally in Limon is really thanks to the goal that the Federacion drew up for this season,” said José Ureña, President of the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica. “The locality finally responded and joined efforts to bring us here, and we are not only going to give a competition of the highest level, but we are going to draw tourism which is another part of our attractiveness.”

Looking toward the Circuito Nacional DayStar fight for the title that takes place in Playa Hermosa in June, Limon is an important stop for the confirmed Top 16, any one of whom can end up being the national champion. The Jaco surfers Luis Vindas and Jair Pérez, already have their 1st place wins in the successive Circuito dates that already passed so far this year, with Perez the current top point ranking leader.

As announced to the members of the Circuito Nacional DayStar athletes, the first 16 ranked surfers will be seeded to enter the contest this weekend from the second round, where the totality of those in Westfalia will offer a greater competitive spectacle never before seen in the province.

Playa Westfalia is a beach break, with a sandy bottom, similar to Playa Hermosa near Jaco, but the tide does not raise or go low significantly on the Caribbean side. In addition, the prediction for this weekend is for waves of 5 to 6 feet.

For this date, the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica is expecting about 300 surfers from all over the country, with a high number of resident surfers coming from the zone. As a matter of fact, two surfers from the area—Germain “Nino” Myrie and Gilbert Brown from Puerto Viejo—will be in attendance. Brown is currently ranked #3. Other locals include Limonese Jordan Herandez and Dexter Lewis.

The inscriptions of the date will take place in Hotel Cocorí in Playa Bonita between the 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. They cost 12,000 colones for the major categories and 8,000 for those under 16 years of age. Full membership for the year costs 15,000.

The categories for this date are: Open, Junior (Under 18), Boys (Under 16), Grommet (Under 14), MiniGrommet (Under 12), Feminine Open, Feminine Junior, Feminine Grommet (Under 15), MiniGrommet Female, Longboard, Masters (Over 35), Grand Masters (Over 40).

The Circuito National DayStar 2009-2010 is sponsored by: DayStar Properties, LimeCoral Apparel Company, Red Bull, 911 Groovy Radio, Quiksilver, Britt Iced, Witch’s Rock Surf Camp, Mango Skate & Surf, Banzaii Surfboards, Carton Surfboard, Odessa Clothing, Ibarquero Design and Surfos Magazine.

Also, some riders believe there are special waves that need a glue between the body and the board, even if they prefer not to use wax in a regular wave ride. New bodyboards are too slippery because they still come with the industrial protection that makes them very appealing. That is why there are always moments for a waxing a...
