Xcel Open Ocean Paddleboard Race: it's tough

XcelWetsuits & UV Performance Gear will welcome over 100 of Australia’s best Paddleboarders to the Gold Coast this weekend for the 2010 Xcel Open Ocean Paddleboard Race.

For the uninitiated, paddleboards are streamlined, specialised craft that are designed for paddling long distances and riding open ocean swells. Coming is a range of sizes, they’re paddled surfboard style in either a prone or kneeling position.

This Saturday’s exciting, 8.5 kilometre specialty racing event caters for both men and women across a range of ages and divisions including open ocean paddleboards, stand-up-paddleboards, outrigger canoes and open ocean paddle skis.

Kicking off from the Snapper Rocks start line at 10am Saturday morning and finishing in Currumbin Estuary, the event continues to go from strength to strength since it’s inception in 2004 and Surfing Queensland’s Chief Executive Officer Scott Gillies said this year’s event is shaping up as the best yet.

“At this stage, we’re on track to break last year’s record number of entrants and the forecast for the race’s conditions seems to be getting better by the day, so there is definitely a buzz amongst the competitors,” said Gillies.

“The Xcel Open Ocean Paddleboard Race attracts professional lifeguards, the country’s best stand-up-paddleboard surfers, iron-men/women as well as a host of the regions’ best amateur racers, so it’s great to get everyone together for what will undoubtedly be a great day,” he said.

Adding to the excitement of the event is the inclusion of several lifeguards from Network Ten’s hit television program Bondi Rescue, with the high profile Bondi boys keen to knock Queensland’s and Australia’s best ocean watermen/women off their thrown.

However, the event doesn’t end when competitors cross the finish line in Currumbin Estuary, with a trophy presentation involving one of Australia’s top models Amanda Hinchcliff and a post race BBQ and beers thanks to XXXX Sumer Bright Lager.

Additionally, competitors will be vying for over $10,000 in prize packs thanks to Xcel Wetsuits & UV Performance Gear, Hawaiian Airlines, Dakine, paddleshop.com.au, Kirra Surf, SolrX Sunscreen and Honolua Clothing.

Hawaiian Airlines will also be giving away two randomly drawn return tickets to Hawaii for one lucky competitor on the day.

Lastly, with the annual Wintersun festival in full flight, organisers are encouraging competitors to be dropped off at Snapper Rocks to avoid any potential frustrations with parking due to road closures surrounding the Coolangatta area.
