Ten hours of great surfing performances. The 2011 Quiksilver Pro Portugal got underway in excellent 4-5ft (1.2m) right-handers at the reef point-break of Ribera D'Ilhas, in Ericeira. Tiago Pires was the major upset of Round 2. The Portuguese surfer had a tough heat while waiting for waves all the way long. The scores simply were not enough and Joan Duru took the first place. "The waves were pumping and my heat was the toughest of the day. I waited for the right wave and it came. Too bad for Tiago but that's the game", said Duru. Young rookie Vasco Ribeiro being narrowly eliminated earlier this afternoon, there is no more Portuguese surfer in the event. Julian Wilson is fired up. In less than five minute, the current ASP World nº 30 scored two consecutive bombs to amass a combined two-wave total of 17.60 out of 20, the highest of the contest. "I saw that set coming and the guys were deep so I paddled them out as far as I could and turned around to get the first one and that got the ball rolling. Then I lucked into that 9 which I got out in time for. It is really fun out there now because this morning it was about knee high and now it has really pumped", explained Wilson. |
