"Surfing for Change: J Bay Nuclear Plant" is a new short movie exploring the dangers of a planned nuclear power plant in the pristine shores of Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa.
The documentary features renowned environmental leader Van Jones, 11-time Surfing World champion Kelly Slater, Foster Gamble and local surfing activists. Everybody remembers what happened in the wake of the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown. Today, surfing in Fukushima is the memory of a dream. There were stunning right-handers being ridden right in front of the nuclear station, every day, and in many other secret spots around the facility. Life is not possible inside the 20km perimeter. Surfers won't surf and humans won't live here, who knows, for decades or centuries. "Surfing for Change: J Bay Nuclear Plant" encourages exploration of alternative energy sources and points to decisions made by leading European countries to abandon nuclear power plants. "I met amazing people working to stop the plant from being built," explains Kyle Thiermann. "If it is built, the landscape would be transformed with the building of a power plant. And, the lives of these residents will also be transformed. And not for the good." |
