Lower Trestles greets the 2012 Hurley Pro

Lower Trestles: California dreamin'

The 2012 Hurley Pro returns to San Onofre State Beach, Lower Trestles, in California, to play a critical role in the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour title race.

Lower Trestles is the spot where the world's best continue to push the limits of what can be done on a wave. San Onofre State Beach is one of the true treasures in California State Parks and offers some of the most consistent surf on the west coast.

Southern California resident Adriano de Souza hopes to utilize his newfound experience at the break to his advantage. He is currently ranked sixth on the ASP WCT ratings and everything is possible for the Brazilian.

"The race for the world title is very close this year," De Souza says. "Mick (Fanning) made it much more difficult for everyone with his second win of the year last month in Tahiti, but a result at Trestles can put me back in the hunt so I am hoping for a good showing".

“I have been living in California for three years now and Trestles is one of the spots I surf a lot,” De Souza said. "It’s great to have such a high-performance wave available to train at, but most of the guys on tour have a lot of experience there. Patrick Gudauskas is a local and Taylor (Knox) and Josh (Kerr) live close by. Everyone on tour has surfed the spot before and everyone is capable of getting a big result."

A common theme amongst the world’s best is the importance of reliable equipment at a wave like Lower Trestles. De Souza has opted to incorporate boards from local shaper Matt Biolos in amongst his extensive quiver of Darren Handley crafts for this year’s event.

"I have been getting a couple of boards from Matt (Biolos) but DHD (Darren Handley) is my primary shaper," De Souza said. "It’s good to have different equipment as it motivates me to get in the water more and try different boards. I have a bunch of good boards from Matt and Darren and am excited for the contest to start".

During the middle of next week, forecasters expect the largest swell of the waiting period, which will run from September 16th-22nd.
