Kelly Slater is out of the Mavericks Invitational 2012-2013. The 11-time world surfing champion withdrew from the event without an official statement.
Slater is not the only one to pull at the last minute. Shane Dorian and Carlos Burle will not be competing at the Mavericks Invitational 2012-2013 because of physical problems.
Kelly Slater is not going to challenge the big waves of Half Moon Bay because the Mavericks Invitational 2012-2013 is not an ASP-sanctioned event and he would be fined and lose points in the upcoming season.
"ASP Top 34 surfers are only permitted to surf in ASP-sanctioned events unless the surfer and/or event applies for a specialty sanction," explains Dave Prodan, ASP communications director, told SF Gate.
Dorian suffered a shoulder injury in the Portuguese waves of Nazare, while Burle also has a shoulder problem after wiping out in Maui.
Tyler Fox, Josh Loya and Colin Dwyer have been called to replaced the three main invitees. The last Mavericks Invitational was held in 2012. Epic waves are expected in the 2012-2013 season.
