Garrett McNamara has definitely improved the Guinness World Record for the biggest wave ever surfed. The authorities from Nazaré, in Portugal, have asked for an impartial analysis.
The public company responsible for the North Canyon big wave surfing project - Nazaré Qualifica - has asked experts to confirm the size of the 28th January ride by Garrett McNamara.
"The Garrett McNamara team believes that the wave surfed Monday is higher than the one of 2011, but to avoid any controversy we asked two surfers who certify the Billabong XXL to confirm the size of the wave, before we talk about a new record", explains Miguel Sousinha, president of Nazaré Qualifica.
Nazaré is in the center of the world news. Dozens of media broadcast networks have established their satellite gear at Praia do Norte to capture the power of the ocean and the fearless attitude of the big wave surfers.
"I must confess that I got impressed with the waves that GMAC and the crew surfed yesterday at Nazaré! The conditions weren't even that great and they were still out there catching those mountains of water. I have a lot of respect for them and I wish them luck and a safe journey", said local surf star Tiago Pires.
