Tiago Pires, the only Portuguese surfer on the ASP World Championship Tour, is out of the Volcom Fiji Pro 2013, due to injury.
In April, Pires suffered a dry-docking injury to his knee which got him out of the Billabong Rio Pro 2013. Doctors predicted four-to-six weeks with these type of injuries, but the Portuguese star is still not 100% fit.
"Unfortunately I won't be able to surf in Fiji. My doctor gave me a 6-8 week rehab period and I'm just a little over 5 weeks now. I tried my best to be ready for this event but after surfing today, I understood that I'm not capable of", explains Tiago Pires.
"I'm going to keep working hard on my rehab to come back stronger and fitter then ever. Thanks a lot for all your kind words". Tiago Pires is keeping a 25th and a 13th finish for the first two surfing stages, held in Kirra and Bells Beach.
Fredrick Patacchia, Owen Wright and Miguel Pupo have also suffered injuries during the first stages of the 2013 elite season. John John Florence is back in the water, after two and half months recovering from the ankle problem.
The Volcom Fiji Pro 2013 runs from 2nd-14th June, in Tavarua.
