Taj Burrow: finally getting Trestles home

Taj Burrow has conquered the Hurley Pro 2013, at San Onofre State Beach, Lower Trestles, San Clemente, California.

Burrow had never tasted victory at the jewel of Southern California. At 35, the Yallingup wave rider could seal his 12th ASP World Tour title.

Julian Wilson, 24, was chasing the second triumph in the Dream Tour, and Lowers offered the right wave for his innovative style and ambitions.

In the Semifinals, Jordy Smith had the opportunity to solidify his performance at Lowers with an excellent result, but he was unable to beat Burrow. Julian Wilson confirmed Hurley's bet and comboed Michel Bourez to secure himself the best result of the season, after three fifth places.

The final heat of the Hurley Pro 2013, an all-Australian affair, was also a maturity versus new school approach. Small waves demand precision and control.

The Lower Trestles skate park got opened with a paddle battle won by Wilson. A 6.67 wave to get things started. With 20 minutes to go, lefthanders were paying the bills. Burrow and Wilson were nervous and tense, playing with seaweed and claiming average waves.

Both surfers had a +8-point wave. How would they build the roof? Taj Burrow picked one of the best sets of the final to better his overall score, i.e., a powerful lefhander worth 7.33.

With less than 10 minutes to go, priority mistakes and poor wave management by Julian Wilson opened the door to Burrow's happiness. The experienced Western Australian would seal the deal with a strong 8.40-point ride.

"It's so sweet. I couldn't be happier. I was kind of in the zone. I had two second places here and now I got it. I am happy for me", says Taj Burrow.

"I surfed as smart as I possibly could. I thought I made a couple of errors, but they ended up playing out. It feels so good to tick this one off the list, I really wanted it more than any".

Surfers are now traveling to Europe for the Quiksilver Pro France 2013, to be run in the southwest of France, between September 26th and October 6th, 2013. Mick Fanning leads the 2013 ASP World Tour rankings.
