Jacob Willcox has taken out the Rip Curl Pro Portugal Trials, at Supertubos, Peniche.
The young Australian surfer defeated Nic von Rupp, Marlon Lipke and Ruben González in the final heat. He will be surfing against Kelly Slater and Kolohe Andino, in the first round of the main event.
Willcox, who won the the ISA Under 16 world title, surfed the best wave of the Trials - a 9 point barrel ride - to secure the highly coveted wildcard.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese national surfing hero and ASP Top 34 surfer Tiago Pires officially withdrew from Peniche because of an ongoing knee injury. Pires will be replaced by reigning Portuguese national champion Frederico Morais.
Morais, will be joined by fellow countryman and 19-year-old rising Portuguese star Francisco Alves, who also received an injury wildcard into the main event, replacing Dusty Payne.
Alves, from nearby Costa da Caparica, is arguably the most experienced Supertubos surfers in the draw. The Rip Curl Pro Portugal will run from October 9th-20th.
