Kelly Slater: rail work at Praia do Norte, Nazaré

Kelly Slater has been spotted tasting the heavy barrels of Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal.

Hawaiian big wave king Garrett McNamara sent the call. "Should be like this tomorrow morning @kellyslater."

The photo sent through his Twitter account showed an A-frame peak shining unridden.

The Floridian got the message and drove to Nazaré, home of the infamous underwater canyon.

It was pumping, and for over an hour, Kelly Slater challenged the 6-10 foot barrels on offer at Praia do Norte.

The 41-year-old surfer found powerful right and left-handers but also enjoyed a few wipeouts in front of a group of fans and media on the beach.

The Nazare Canyon wave is a mix of swell refraction, a rapid depth reduction, a converging wave, and a local water channel.

With the perfect wind speed and direction, it turns out to be the biggest beach break barrel in the world.
