Jamie O'Brien: playing in home barrels

After four consecutive lay days, the Volcom Pipe Pro 2014 is finally underway. The 5-Star ASP event kicked off in head-high surf, north of Pipeline.

The alternative spot of "Gums" offered the occasional hollow lip for surfers wanting to advance through the initial round of competition.

Jamie O'Brien, 30, a former Pipe Master and winner of the 2010 Volcom Pipe Pro, won the wildcard into the round of 96 during a special heat.

"I looked out there and figured it could have been anywhere in the world. But I surf 'Gums' all the time, it's a fun wave and I'm excited. I just did a lot of paddling, did a lot of work and it paid off," says O'Brien.

"It requires a totally different approach, different boards - you're paddling your small wave boards again, and you're groveling. But you've got to get through the bad to get to the good, and I'd say the swell forecast looks pretty good."

Other standouts included Brent Dorrington, Luke Davis, Dege O'Connell, and Cristobal De Col. When competition resumes, it will be with the top seeds of the event: Kelly Slater, John John Florence, Tanner Gudauskas, Ezekiel Lau. and Dusty Payne.

The Volcom Pipe Pro is an extra special event for the local Hawaiian competitors, being that it is the official Pipe Masters Qualifier. The top eight Hawaiian competitors in the Volcom Pipe Pro will be rewarded with local seeds into the 2014 event, which is part of the Triple Crown series and wraps up the ASP World Tour in December.
