Antoine Delpero: alone in the dark

Antoine Delpero (FRA) today claimed The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) Goanna Pro Tapia 2010 with a comfortable win over Alexis Deniel (FRA) to take out his first Goanna Pro Tapia title. On a day where huge seas and wild winds forced event organisers to postpone proceedings until late in the afternoon today’s victory also entitles Delpero to the ASP European Longboard title.

Stormy 8-10ft (2.5-3m) waves pounded the coast throughout the day and with rain, hail, strong cross-shore winds the final heats were held up until high tide at the main beach break in Tapia.

Stephanie Gilmore: Bells Beach Queen

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, reigning three-time ASP Women’s World Champion, has claimed the 2010 Rip Curl Women’s Pro presented by Ford Fiesta over opponent Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 26, in a hard-fought Final.

Event No. 2 on the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Rip Curl Women’s Pro came to a dramatic close today, with the unstoppable, young Australian collecting her third Bells Title in four attempts.

“I’m a bit overwhelmed by this,” Gilmore said. “To ring the bell once is an amazing feeling, but three times? I don’t think the gravity of it has sunk in yet. It’s an incredible event and I feel very fortunate to have achieved such success here so far.”

2010 Billabong XXL Awards: from Germany, with love

The finalists for the 2010 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards presented by Monster Energy were announced today in the wake of one of the greatest years in surfing history. Following 12 months of enormous swell events from South Africa to Hawaii to Australia to California to Mexico to Tahiti and beyond, over 1000 entered images have been distilled down to this year's elite nominations. Video and still images of all the top rides are now available for viewing on the updated event website at

The winners will be announced on Friday, April 23, 2010 at the tenth-annual invitation-only awards gala at the Grove Theater in Anaheim, California in front of 2,250 surf world VIPs. The entire night's festivities will be webcast live on the event website and will also be the focus of a one-hour television special airing on the ESPN networks starting on the evening of May 18.
