Bethany Hamilton's life story will be screened in 'Soul Surfer'

Transporting a real-life tale of adventure, tragedy, courage, and a story as impressive as Hawaii's most famous waves, principal photography began this week on the North Shores of Oahu and Kauai, on Soul Surfer. The inspirational film is based on the autobiography of 19-year-old champion surfer Bethany Hamilton, who, for over six years, has defied all odds to compete and win professional championships after losing her arm in a shark attack at age thirteen.

Soul Surfer stars Golden Globe nominee Dennis Quaid (as Bethany's father Tom), Academy Award winner Helen Hunt (as Bethany's mother Cheri), Young Artist Award winner AnnaSophia Robb (as Bethany Hamilton) and four-time Grammy winner and platinum-selling music artist Carrie Underwood (as Church Youth Leader Sarah Hill) in her film debut. The cast also includes Lorraine Nicholson (as Alana Blanchard) and Kevin Sorbo (as Holt Blanchard). Watch the trailer for the "Soul Surfer" movie, here.

Newly launched Mandalay Vision and Brookwell McNamara Entertainment and Life's A Beach Entertainment present Soul Surfer, a Sean McNamara Film, distributed by Affirm Films, a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company, financed by Enticing Entertainment and Island Film Group. Sean McNamara will direct from a screenplay by McNamara, Deborah Schwartz, Douglas Schwartz and Michael Berk based on the best-selling novel Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton. Contributors to the screenplay include Ron Bass, Jen Smolka and Kara Holden. The film is produced by Douglas Schwartz, David Brookwell, Sean McNamara and Roy Dutcher Hofstetter and executive produced by David Zelon, David Tice and Dominic Ianno.

The Bride of the Atlantic Surf Festival 2010

Experienced competitors Leo Alcantara and Pascual Silverio won "The Bride of the Atlantic Surf Festival 2010" at the Puntilla beach in Puerto Plata, in front of Fort San Felipe, with a posthumous tribute of the birth of musical artist Eduardo Brito, February 6 and 7, 2010.

Organized by the Federación Dominicana de Surf (FEDOSURF), chaired by Nestor Puente, the annual competition was audited for the first time with computer software used by national judges.

Leo Alcantara of Santo Domingo, was motivated both days of the competition, drawing waves and trusting in God. With eight waves total, his deft maneuvers earned high scores of 7.33 and 6.30, for a total of 13.63 points. He dedicated his First Place win to his girlfriend Sandra.

Alcantara, an athlete with fifteen years in the sport, resides in Cabarete and teaches surfing at Encuentro beach. He is a graduate of the University of the Caribbean.

Surfing celebrities: the surfer and the rock star

Kelly Slater and Eddie Vedder and a few friends have spent a nice surfing day, at Makaha Beach, in Hawaii. The 10-time world surfing champion has enjoyed some pretty relaxed waves on the West side of Oahu, alongside with the Pearl Jam frontman.

The surf was small, but quite fun. The Floridian was playing around the traditional Hawaiian canoes that were also enjoying wave rides in Makaha Beach. After a few tries, Slater even got a lift from the outrigger canoe.

Eddie Vedder is known for his passion for surfing. The rock star surfing celebrity, a vegetarian, is very active in the surfing life, through environmental NGO's like The Surfrider Foundation. Vedder has other notable surf friends like Laird Hamilton and Jack Johnson.
