Tiago Pires: a surf star in a football world

Surfing is becoming a very popular sport in many coastal countries. In the near future, it will also become attractive to inland nations, as successful artificial wave solutions spread quickly.

SurferToday readers in Portugal have discovered and sent out a very special photo. "Record" is one of the best selling daily sports newspaper in Portugal and football/soccer is king in more than 80% of the pages.

In page three, Tiago Pires, the Dream Tour surfer, appears riding a massive tube in an ad payed by his local sponsor TMN, a mobile phone company. The huge photo also carries a caption where the sponsor congratulates the "Portuguese Tiger" for his third place in the 2011 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, in Australia.

Quiksilver Moments: slow motion attitude

"Quiksilver Moments" is the new surf movie brought by the North American surf company.

The film shows the full talent of the 2011 Quiksilver surf team, in a total time of 23m53s. "Quiksilver Moments" is free.

"Quiksilver Moments" is the follow-up to last year's "Quiksilver Cypher".

Jamie Sterling: the go-for-it big wave surfer

Jamie Sterling has been crowned champion of the Big Wave World Tour 2010/2011. The big rider will be awarded the official title on April 30th, at the Surfing Heritage Foundation, San Clemente, California.

Sterling has reached the final heat of every big wave events and secured enough points (2509) to claim the overall victory. Kohl Christensen took the second place (1300), followed by Anthony Tashnick (1257), Carlos Burle (1250) and Marcos Monteiro (1131).

The champion took the Billabong Pico Alto Invitacional 2010, held in Punta Hermosa, Peru. He confirmed why he's one of the best big wave surfers in the world. The last two Big Wave World Tour stages could not be run, due to the lack of relevant swell in the months of December, January and February.
