The "Casa de Porros", one of the best windsurfing spots in southern Europe, is in danger. The Spanish Tarifa town hall has closed access to the place and is not allowing cars to park nearby.
For many decades, this place has been a free camping area for all wave and wind sports enthusiasts who share the love for nature and community. The pressure in "Casa de Porros" has increased with all the vans, campers and caravans.
And that's why the local tourism lobby thought it was a great opportunity to close down the place. The authorities have decided to end the question by digging a trench that will halt vehicles and, therefore, windsurfers, kitesurfers, surfers and bodyboarders.
The local economy is already feeling the lack of clients. The kite and windsurfing schools say they are running out of clients. The question remains: is there a third way of treating a problem? Couldn't it be possible to allow people to park and camp with a list of strict rules?
Tarifa is known to be the windsurf spot with the most windy days in Europe and needs "Casa de Porros" to hold the title of Europe's best windsurfing and kitesurfing destination. And there's no other way around.
