Ice Windsurfing: wipeouts are tough

The Ice and Snow Sailing World Championship 2014 will be run in Pereslavl-Zalessky, Russia, between March 2nd-10th, 2014.

The best ice sailors in the world will travel to the Plesheevo Lake to compete in Sleds with handheld sails, which means standard windsurfing rigs (Course Race, Short Track Slalom, GPS Speed), Kites with skis and Kites with snowboards (Course Race, Freestyle and GPS Speed) and Wings (Course Race, Short Track Slalom and GPS Speed).

The competitors will be grouped in several age division: Overall, Women, Youth, Masters, Grand Masters, and Veterans.

Ice sailing can be both fun and extremely dangerous, too. Competitors can easily reach speed peaks of 50 knots, over cold, thick ice. Avoiding accidents is the first and main rule of the sport.

The World Ice and Snow Sailing Association (WISSA) has been officially formed in 1987, at Worthsee, Germany.
