Schurmann shines in the Highland Spring HIHO 2008
Tuesday, 08 July 2008 09:12

Conditions during the week were near perfect with steady 15-18-knots each day until the final day when they went variable. Racing commences in the sheltered waters off Virgin Gorda's North Sound.

Day two sees the thrilling Anegada race where competitors reach 13-miles from Virgin Gorda to Pomato Point on Anegada's West end. Anegada differs from the rest of the British Virgin Islands in that it is flat affording no visual references until the racers approach the islands shore.

It was in this race that the Schurmann was threatened by a charging Jean-Marc Peyronnet from St Martin. In fact, Peyronnet reached the beach just ahead of Schurmann but the Brazilian ground him down on the run ot the finish flag.

Schurmann trounced the fleet in the next days race from Leverick Bay to The Baths on Virgin Gorda. "Top racers always do well in this race," confirmed race organizer Andy Morrell. "It's the most technical of the races we offer during the week."

Offringa and Albeau conquer day four of PWA Gran Canaria
Tuesday, 08 July 2008 08:39

Mammoth full fleet race action saw Antoine Albeau (Starboard, NeilPryde) add another victory to his run of first place finishes, ahead of Peter Volwater (North Sails) in second, and Kevin Pritchard in third (Starboard, Gaastra, Dakine, MFC).

Women’s Freestyle Double Elimination

Taking centre stage on day four, the women’s freestyle double elimination swung into action. First to fall were Olga Raskina (JP, NeilPryde) and Nina Tjernberg (F2, North Sails), who failed to match the routines of rivals Iballa Moreno (North Sails) and Silva Alba Orozco (MFC).

Gaining momentum, Moreno and Alba Orozco continued to dominate when they met Evi Tsape (Fanatic, NeilPryde) and Yolanda Freites De Brendt (Fanatic, North Sails) in the next round. Tsape had no reply to Moreno’s powerful forward and slick flaka, likewise Freites De Brendt couldn’t match moves like Alba Orozco’s fully planning spock 540. Moreno and Alba Orozco advanced to go head to head in the next heat, the victor meeting Laure Treboux (Fanatic, North Sails).
