Tim Hamilton: protecting from the sun

The 2012 IBA World Tour will debut a new "Showdown" format in all bodyboard competitions, starting with the 2012 Box Pro, from 26th March. The new draw was voted in by the riders board and was originally suggested by Jeff Hubbard. The "Showdown" format will work with a few simple rules.

Initially, 32 riders will start in Round 1, with 4-man heats progressing first and second straight to Round 3. Third and fourth places go into Round 2.

In Round 2, there will also be 4-man heats, with first and second going into Round 3. Third and fourth places are eliminated from competition. The Round 3 is a 3-man heat, with first and second straight to Round 4. Third bodyboarder is out of competition.

After Round 3, the draw is re-seeded. The Round 4 is a non-elimination "showcase" round, where riders will be able to push the boundaries of progressive riding without the fear of elimination.

Then, the first bodyboarder goes to the quarterfinals, second goes to Round 6. Third and fourth go to Round 5. Round 5, Round 6, quarterfinals, semifinals and the final are man-on-man battles.

The 2012 IBA World Tour will adopt this new format along with the "One World Ranking" overall structure.

The push through, or punch through technique allows surfers to get past a small broken wave and reach the lineup without having to duck dive or turtle roll.
