Guilherme Tamega: bodyboarding champion in action

Local star and wildcard Jose Otavio took top honours by posting the two highest heat scores of the day, 16.63 in Round 5 and 16.08 in Round 6 of the 2012 Itacoatiara Pro, in Brazil. The Quarterfinalists have been decided. Two-time world champion Ben Player will face current world champion Pierre-Louis Costes.

Number 1 seed Dave Winchester is matched up against the Brazilian danger man and 2008 world champion Uri Valadao. Six-time world champion Guilherme Tamega will be up against his talented fellow country man Eder Luciano.

Jose Otavio will be surfing against Mitch Rawlins, who posted a heat score of 16.00 to take out his Round 4 heat.

The new showdown format features two non-elimination Rounds throughout the draw. Round 1 and 4 have been designed to encourage riders to go bigger and harder, being rewarded for a Round 1 first or second place, by skipping Round 2 and a Round 4 win is rewarded with a quarter final spot, deemed by most riders as a counting result.

A Round 4 second place finish is seeded into Round 6, skipping Round 5. With only seven heats of competition remaining, organizers are hoping to crown a 2012 IBA Itacoatiara Pro champion in the morning.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved surfing's qualification system for the Tokyo 2020.
