The 2017 Teahupoo Tahiti Challenge kicked off with spectacular six-to-eight-foot barreling waves at the End of the Road.

The day started with the Trials and the first perfect 10-point ride by Paul Blaz. The Australian bodyboarder continued to impress by winning his Round 1 heat.

The quality of the live broadcast improved dramatically, and all fans were able to follow the action via multiple camera angles.

The main event brought a few surprises, but the top seeds were able to survive the first clash. Amaury Lavernhe, Mike Stewart, Jared Houston, Tanner McDaniel, and Jeff Hubbard advanced through to Round 3.

The Polynesian fleet had a great start - seven Tahitians and Hawaiians managed to skip the repechage heat; Dudu Pedra, the only Brazilian competing in the event, also won his Round 1 heat.

"Today was an incredible day of competition but tomorrow could be a day that will go down in history if the swell forecasters are correct and Teahupoo delivers what we are all waiting for," notes Alex Leon, CEO of the APB World Tour.

"There is going to be crazy wave riding happen tomorrow with the world's best bodyboarders facing the heaviest wave in the world, Teahupoo, in solid 13-to-16-foot waves."
