James Trevena: airbone at Tolcarne Beach

Luke Harper, Tyler Littlejohns and Joe Woodhouse have proved that the future of British bodyboarding is bright, at the Bodyboard Depot's Junior Showdown.

Talented young riders have shown why bodyboarding is such a popular sport in the land of fog and rain. Tolcarne Beach welcomed an event designed to help young riders get over any nerves about entering competitions.

The conditions were ideal for the day, enough power to make tricks functional and waves were not so big. The assembly of 16 keen young groms were talked through competition format, signals for stopping and starting heats and for those wanting to learn more, heat timings and strategy were covered.

To say the judges were impressed with the standard of riding would be putting it mildly. "There are riders here today who given these conditions again would be a threat to some of the big names on the BBC Open Tour!", says Sam Buckle , veteran of the British bodyboarding scene.

Every heat was hotly contested and when the riders got back to the beach, they were super stoked and delighted with the experience.

The extremely promising young talent that is Luke Harper took out the Under 14 division, in fine style.

After summer training in France and clocking up a lot of time on the south coast's heavier waves, Tyler Littlejohns showed, at just 15 years old, he's going to be a tough draw for any Open division rider.

With the Under 18 final held on the Wedge, local ripper Joe Woodhouse surfed a very mature heat, waiting patiently for better waves and going big when he could, getting big scores from the judges for a tweaked invert.
