Dave Winchester: he knows the Rebel well

After a two-month break the Rebel Sport Pro Tour will restart on the mid north coast of NSW with the Port Macquarie Pro on July 15th – 18th.

Once again the event will be coupled with the second round of the NSW State Bodyboarding titles and organizers expect over 200 competitors across the 4 days of competition.

Current ratings leader Jared Houston from South Africa will be present along with Port local and former World Champion Damian King.

Both King and Houston are also positioned in the top of the IBA World Tour rankings and will both jet off to Europe after the event to chase the World Championship.

The two riders are in a commanding position after strong performances in the 5 Star event at Soldiers Beach in April.

“I am in Australia for the Shark Island Challenge and it works out well for me to do this event” said Houston. “I am stoked to be leading this tour, it’s the hardest domestic circuit in the world and hopefully I can return after Europe for the final leg”.

Defending Rebel Sport Pro champion Corey McLean is currently positioned in 27th spot on the rankings and is determined to finish strong and a shaky start to his title defense. “It wasn’t the start I’d been hoping for” said McLean. “I am now living on the South Coast of NSW and have been surfing a lot of reefs and feel that the change of scenery has improved my riding in the few months”.

The Rebel Sport Pro Tour will head to WA and SA in August before winding up in November on the Gold Coast.

The event has been made possible by the support of the Port Macquarie / Hastings council and events coordinator and former rugby Union player Mark Ella has been instrumental in the deal.

“The council are very happy to welcome back top level bodyboarding to the region. Port is the only place in the World to produce two World bodyboarding champions in Michael Eppelstun & Damian King, and the town is still producing champions to this day” said Ella.

The event kicks off at town beach at 7am on Thursday 15th July with the presentation from 4pm on Sunday 18th.
