Marchia and Tom Morey: together for 47 years

Tom Morey is recovering well from his eye surgeries. The father of modern bodyboarding has recovered part of his sight.

In the last five years, Morey nearly went blind. However, the GoFundMe campaign initiated by Mike Stewart and friends helped Tom pay for surgeries and other eye treatment.

Bodyboarding legend and founder of ebodyboarding.com, Jay Reale, had the opportunity to chat with Tom and Marchia Morey about the latest health improvements.

"We had a tremendous outpouring of help - funds, and prayers - from new and old friends. It's been overwhelming. The financial contributions have made recovery possible," notes Tom Morey.

"I'm not completely recovered, but I'm getting there. I've gone from just barely being able to see out of this [left] eye after two operations - and nothing on this [right eye] - to being able to see 10, 15, and 20 percent in a period of about two or three weeks."

Morey says he regained binocular vision, which allows him to see colors and objects in three dimensions.

"At first, I could just read gas prices. Then, when she [Marchia] was driving at night, and I could read street signs. The first indication was when we were at a place with a television - 20, 30, 40 feet away - and there's a guy with his jersey and a 'number seven.' I could see that it was football, and it was red, and it was a seven."

"Now, I can glance television. I can see well enough to understand what's there in the content and understand the movies. It's been a long haul, a long struggle for her [Marchia] because she's been a wife, house cleaner, secretary, and nurse."

Tom Morey is taking six eye drops of treatment a day to help him improve his sight even further. But he can now, and once again, appreciate his wife's beauty. The couple has been together for 47 years.

"Her looks are only a part of an expression of who she really. So, I'm seeing who she is quite thoroughly," concludes the inventor of the boogie board.
