Ferrol 2008

The third and final leg of the IBA European events got underway today at Doninos Beach in Ferrol and the waves at this stage are shaping up well with lots of swell forecast for the four day window.

Along with the Men’s event the first round of the 2008 IBA World DK Tour will be contested with US$5000 and 1000 championship points up for grabs. Hawaiian Dave Hubbard is fired up to do well in both disciplines and is stoked to see the IBA DK World Tour finally taking shape.

“Yeh I am really happy that the guys at Surfusiom are leading the way with an International event. There’s a lot of guys still ripping around the Globe on the knee and they deserve a dedicated World Tour” said Dubb.

The Men’s Tour event is also shaping up well with most of the title contenders heading to Ferrol to gain any points they can as the race for the 2008 IBA World Crown tightens up.

Guilherme Tamega

The Brazilians continued to donimate the European leg of the IBA World Tour with Guilherme Tamega & Neymara Carvalho taking out the Sintra Portugal Pro in small clean waves at Praia Grande.

Tamega dominated both his semi and the final with an explosive combination of ARS's and rolls to demolish the opposition.

It a great result for Guilherme considering that he sat out last year and is requalifying in 2008. Now he is a serious contender for yet another world title.

It was also a good result for Neymara who was 6th on the IBA WWT going into Sintra and needed a solid result to get back the World Title

All in all it was another awesome event at Sintra and competitors will now packup and head to Ferrol in Spain for the next Mens event and the Miss Sumol Cup for Women.

Sopelana BBK Pro

Uri Valadao and Mayla Venturin have won the Sopelana BBK Pro!

Uri defeated Eder Luciano and Mayla defeated Christiane Kale making for an all Brazilian domination of both divisions.

In the day three, conditions were perfect for competitors and spectators alike with sunny skies and fun sized  2-3 footers being the order of the day.

The day began with the last 4 heats of R5 for the Men and as expected the action was red hot.

Heat 5 went to the local Aritz Larrinaga who showed that local knowledge counts for a lot with a solid win over Frenchman Pierre Costes. Exit Gastao Entrudo and Gorka Lasa.

Heat 6 was another great battle with the lead constantly changing. Manuel Centeno was leading early but picked up an interference and finished last ahead of Brazils Leonardo Costa with Pablo Serano (Ger) second and Hugo Pinheiro (Port) winning.

Heat 7 and current World champ Ben Player struggles to find waves with power and falls short along with Arim Caberara (Cny). The Brazilian duo of Rene Xavier and Eder Luciano dominated and go 1-2 into the quarters.

In the last of the R5 Men’s heats Mark McCarthy (Sth Af) leads from start to finish with a polished display of small wave surfing. John Showell (Aust) managed to sneak into second place in the closing stages with a tube/roll combo leaving Ryan Hardy in third and Hermano Castro (Brz) last.

The Women’s quarterfinals were man on man and results were as follows.

Heat1 Christiane KALE Defeated Eunate AGUIRRE
Heat 2 Isabella SOUSA Defeated Soraia ROCHA
Heat 3 Jessica BECKER Defeated Neymara CARVALHO
Heat 4 Maylla VENTURIN Defeated Lumar GUITTARD

The Men’s quarters were also a great finish to another long but successful day.

Heat 1 Uri Valadao defeated local rider David Perez.
Heat 2 Deigo Cabrera defeated Fabio Rodriguez
Heat 3 Rene Xavier defeated Aritz Larrinaga
Heat 4 Eder Luciano Defeated Pablo Serano

The push through, or punch through technique allows surfers to get past a small broken wave and reach the lineup without having to duck dive or turtle roll.
