Kauai: heavy pollution in world-class surf

Thirteen Kaua'i surf breaks have failed to pass the test of health standards, in Hawaii, according to the Surfrider Foundation.

The Surfrider Foundation's Kaua'i Chapter tests 20 surf breaks and freshwater streams on a monthly basis.

Thirteen of the Chapter's 20 sampling sites exceeded health standards, and the highest reading taken at Niumalu Beach Park was nearly 100 times the national health limit.

Surfrider proved how dangerous and polluted local waterways and beaches got during storm conditions including heavy rains, flooding, high winds and surf.

Runoff caused by the rains has loaded the streams and its receiving beaches with pollution from overwhelmed septic systems and cesspools, animal waste, dead animals and flood debris.

Surf environamentalists have been advocating for the State to post health warning signs, similar to signs posted by life guards during heavy surf, to provide better public health protection in polluted conditions.

Surf breaks with high bacteria rates are: Pakalas, Waikokos, Pine Trees, Kalapaki Bay, Rock Quarry, Wainiha Surf, The Bowl, Wainiha Stream, Kapa'a Beach Park, Koloa Landing, Hanamaulu Stream, Nawiliwili Stream and Niumalu Beach Park.
