Lagoon Beach, Cape Town, South Africa

A 38-year-old kitesurfer died Saturday after strong winds smashed him into boulders at Milnerton's Lagoon beach in Cape town, South Africa.

He was from Bloubergstrand.

Very strong winds of more than 15 knots were gusting at the time, according to the National Sea Rescue Institute.

The kitesurfer slammed against rocks alongside the beach and suffered fatal injuries, despite efforts by paramedics to save him.

Dimitri Maramenides, the founder and owner of Epic Kites, rode his kite a few hours before Hurricane Florence hit the East Coast of the United States.
