Mark Sprod: a passionate kitesurfer

A kitesurfer has lost his life in a freak accident, at Cottesloe Beach, in Western Australia.

The 50-year-old rider from Victoria Park was sailing when he suddenly stumbled and was knocked unconscious. He was immediately blown by gusts of wind up a sand dune, through a tree and into a bollard, on Marine Parade.

The accident happened at 3.30pm local time. Fellow kiteboarders tried to grab hold of the man before he was blown away by the gusts of wind, but it was not possible.

Mark Sprod was pronounced dead at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, with extensive chest, neck and head injuries, despite efforts to revive him at the scene.

The Western Australia kitesurfing community is in shock. The rider is survived by a three-year-old boy.
